Libtiff: libtiff write-what-where
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 35/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.97% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 61.1% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: libtiff.gitlab.io/libtiff/ libtiff 4.7.1; azl3 libtiff 4.6.0-8 on Azure Linux 3.0 4.6.0-9; cbl2 libtiff 4.6.0-8 on CBL Mariner 2.0 4.6.0-9.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to libtiff.gitlab.io/libtiff/ libtiff 4.7.1; azl3 libtiff 4.6.0-8 on Azure Linux 3.0 4.6.0-9; cbl2 libtiff 4.6.0-8 on CBL Mariner 2.0 4.6.0-9 or later.
Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it
Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
A flaw was found in Libtiff. This vulnerability is a "write-what-where" condition, triggered when the library processes a specially crafted TIFF image file. By providing an abnormally large image height value in the file's metadata, an attacker can trick the library into writing attacker-controlled color data to an arbitrary memory location. This memory corruption can be exploited to cause a denial of service (application crash) or to achieve arbitrary code execution with the permissions of the user.

Variant candidates
Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.
No nightly-computed relations.
Chain candidates
An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
