CVE-2024-8176: Libexpat: expat: improper restriction of xml entity expansion depth in libexpat
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 30/100)
- Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.3% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 71.4% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
- Fixed version: github.com/libexpat/libexpat/ libexpat 2.7.0; azl3 expat 2.6.4-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.6.4-1; cbl2 expat 2.6.4-1 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.6.4-1.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to github.com/libexpat/libexpat/ libexpat 2.7.0; azl3 expat 2.6.4-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.6.4-1; cbl2 expat 2.6.4-1 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.6.4-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
A stack overflow vulnerability exists in the libexpat library due to the way it handles recursive entity expansion in XML documents. When parsing an XML document with deeply nested entity references, libexpat can be forced to recurse indefinitely, exhausting the stack space and causing a crash. This issue could lead to denial of service (DoS) or, in some cases, exploitable memory corruption, depending on the environment and library usage.
