CVE-2026-23388: Squashfs: check metadata block offset is within range
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 28/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.12% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: Linux Linux 01ee0bcc29864b78249308e8b35042b09bbf5fe3, 0c8ab092aec3ac4294940054772d30b511b16713, 3b9499e7d677dd4366239a292238489a804936b2; azl3 kernel 6.6.126.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.130.1-1; cbl2 kernel 5.15.202.1-1 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 Release Notes.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 01ee0bcc29864b78249308e8b35042b09bbf5fe3, 0c8ab092aec3ac4294940054772d30b511b16713, 3b9499e7d677dd4366239a292238489a804936b2; azl3 kernel 6.6.126.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.130.1-1; cbl2 kernel 5.15.202.1-1 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 Release Notes or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: Squashfs: check metadata block offset is within range Syzkaller reports a "general protection fault in squashfs_copy_data" This is ultimately caused by a corrupted index look-up table, which produces a negative metadata block offset. This is subsequently passed to squashfs_copy_data (via squashfs_read_metadata) where the negative offset causes an out of bounds access. The fix is to check that the offset is within range in squashfs_read_metadata. This will trap this and other cases.
