CVE-2023-6847: Improper Authentication in GitHub Enterprise Server leading to Authentication Bypass for Public Repository Data
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 30/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.81% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 56.7% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: GitHub Enterprise Server 3.10.4, 3.11.1, 3.9.7.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to GitHub Enterprise Server 3.10.4, 3.11.1, 3.9.7 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
An improper authentication vulnerability was identified in GitHub Enterprise Server that allowed a bypass of Private Mode by using a specially crafted API request. To exploit this vulnerability, an attacker would need network access to the Enterprise Server appliance configured in Private Mode. This vulnerability affected all versions of GitHub Enterprise Server since 3.9 and was fixed in version 3.9.7, 3.10.4, and 3.11.1. This vulnerability was reported via the GitHub Bug Bounty program.

Root cause
Authentication is added route by route instead of being enforced in one place. When a route added later bypasses the shared middleware, the session check never runs for it.
