CVE-2024-50131: tracing: Consider the NULL character when validating the event length
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.24% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: Linux Linux 02874ca52df2ca2423ba6122039315ed61c25972, 0b6e2e22cb23105fcb171ab92f0f7516c69c8471, 5e3231b352725ff4a3a0095e6035af674f2d8725; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1.
- Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).
Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 02874ca52df2ca2423ba6122039315ed61c25972, 0b6e2e22cb23105fcb171ab92f0f7516c69c8471, 5e3231b352725ff4a3a0095e6035af674f2d8725; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1 or later.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tracing: Consider the NULL character when validating the event length strlen() returns a string length excluding the null byte. If the string length equals to the maximum buffer length, the buffer will have no space for the NULL terminating character. This commit checks this condition and returns failure for it.

Root cause
When data is copied, the source length is not compared with the size of the destination buffer. Excess data overwrites adjacent memory.
