CVE-2026-53157: net: phonet: free phonet_device after RCU grace period

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.12% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 09c9b92c2010481160245244ea8fa1d06d5d4ae0, 2ec8011cce0cd0fc7a5068585d867fc08d508578, 52b8f5ef82c886f7cd24617915e4b1579ddfd001; azl3 kernel 6.6.143.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.144.1-1.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 09c9b92c2010481160245244ea8fa1d06d5d4ae0, 2ec8011cce0cd0fc7a5068585d867fc08d508578, 52b8f5ef82c886f7cd24617915e4b1579ddfd001; azl3 kernel 6.6.143.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.144.1-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: phonet: free phonet_device after RCU grace period phonet_device_destroy() removes a phonet_device from the per-net device list with list_del_rcu(), but frees it immediately. RCU readers walking the same list can still hold a pointer to the object after it has been removed, leading to a slab-use-after-free. Use kfree_rcu(), matching the lifetime rule already used by phonet_address_del() for the same object type.

Root cause

After a memory region is freed, another reference pointing to it is still used. By then, the same region may have been allocated for different data.

A representative example of this vulnerability class. Not the vendor's source code; it shows the faulty pattern and its fix.

Vulnerable

Fixed

c

Attack context

MITRE CAPEC attack patterns and ATT&CK techniques for this weakness class (CWE). A starting point for detection rules and threat hunting.

MITRE has no CAPEC/ATT&CK mapping for this CWE.
