CVE-2026-46078: erofs: fix the out-of-bounds nameoff handling for trailing dirents

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 28/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.13% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. No account or password is required. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 1d55445226c75ddd4e78b09b3e7d99109b28c366, 222055e6b4063abd2d9e13c3d49bbd1724c50789, 48b27a955d22391c7f30169fa7b6b2e1977f1ce4; azl3 kernel 6.6.139.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.141.1-1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 1d55445226c75ddd4e78b09b3e7d99109b28c366, 222055e6b4063abd2d9e13c3d49bbd1724c50789, 48b27a955d22391c7f30169fa7b6b2e1977f1ce4; azl3 kernel 6.6.139.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.141.1-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: erofs: fix the out-of-bounds nameoff handling for trailing dirents Currently we already have boundary-checks for nameoffs, but the trailing dirents are special since the namelens are calculated with strnlen() with unchecked nameoffs. If a crafted EROFS has a trailing dirent with nameoff >= maxsize, maxsize - nameoff can underflow, causing strnlen() to read past the directory block. nameoff0 should also be verified to be a multiple of `sizeof(struct erofs_dirent)` as well [1]. No dated events beyond publication.

No history yet (it accumulates with the daily EPSS job).

Patch and commit links

No credits in the CNA record.

Variant candidates

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
