mptcp: plug races between subflow fail and subflow creation

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.32% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 659da22dee5ff316ba63bdaeeac7b58b5442f6c2, 7c96d519ee15a130842a6513530b4d20acd2bfcd, c476d627584b7589a134a8b48dd5c6639e4401c5; azl3 kernel 6.6.96.2-2 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.104.2-1.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 659da22dee5ff316ba63bdaeeac7b58b5442f6c2, 7c96d519ee15a130842a6513530b4d20acd2bfcd, c476d627584b7589a134a8b48dd5c6639e4401c5; azl3 kernel 6.6.96.2-2 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.104.2-1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mptcp: plug races between subflow fail and subflow creation We have races similar to the one addressed by the previous patch between subflow failing and additional subflow creation. They are just harder to trigger. The solution is similar. Use a separate flag to track the condition 'socket state prevent any additional subflow creation' protected by the fallback lock. The socket fallback makes such flag true, and also receiving or sending an MP_FAIL option. The field 'allow_infinite_fallback' is now always touched under the relevant lock, we can drop the ONCE annotation on write.
