CVE-2024-53178: smb: Don't leak cfid when reconnect races with open_cached_dir

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 18/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.54% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 1d76332d783db12684b67592f1fb2057b88af4c3, 31fabf70d58388d5475e48ca8a6b7d2847b36678, 73a57b25b4df23f22814fc06b7e8f9cf570be026.
  • Severity is disputed: the assigning authority (CNA) scores it 7.5, NVD 4.7.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 1d76332d783db12684b67592f1fb2057b88af4c3, 31fabf70d58388d5475e48ca8a6b7d2847b36678, 73a57b25b4df23f22814fc06b7e8f9cf570be026 or later.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: smb: Don't leak cfid when reconnect races with open_cached_dir open_cached_dir() may either race with the tcon reconnection even before compound_send_recv() or directly trigger a reconnection via SMB2_open_init() or SMB_query_info_init(). The reconnection process invokes invalidate_all_cached_dirs() via cifs_mark_open_files_invalid(), which removes all cfids from the cfids->entries list but doesn't drop a ref if has_lease isn't true. This results in the currently-being-constructed cfid not being on the list, but still having a refcount of 2. It leaks if returned from open_cached_dir(). Fix this by setting cfid->has_lease when the ref is actually taken; the cfid will not be used by other threads until it has a valid time.
