CVE-2024-50296: net: hns3: fix kernel crash when uninstalling driver

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 22/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.25% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 4.19.324, 5.10.230, 5.15; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 4.19.324, 5.10.230, 5.15; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1 or later.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: net: hns3: fix kernel crash when uninstalling driver When the driver is uninstalled and the VF is disabled concurrently, a kernel crash occurs. The reason is that the two actions call function pci_disable_sriov(). The num_VFs is checked to determine whether to release the corresponding resources. During the second calling, num_VFs is not 0 and the resource release function is called. However, the corresponding resource has been released during the first invoking. Therefore, the problem occurs: [15277.839633][T50670] Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 0000000000000020 ... Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
