CVE-2024-50285: ksmbd: check outstanding simultaneous SMB operations
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 22/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.61% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: Linux Linux 0a77d947f599b1f39065015bec99390d0c0022ee, 1f993777275cbd8f74765c4f9d9285cb907c9be5, d2e2830c19824c221b6f5e17bf272438cc0e601c; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1.
- Severity is disputed: the assigning authority (CNA) scores it 7.5, NVD 5.5.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 0a77d947f599b1f39065015bec99390d0c0022ee, 1f993777275cbd8f74765c4f9d9285cb907c9be5, d2e2830c19824c221b6f5e17bf272438cc0e601c; azl3 kernel 6.6.57.1-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1; azl3 kernel 6.6.64.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.64.2-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ksmbd: check outstanding simultaneous SMB operations If Client send simultaneous SMB operations to ksmbd, It exhausts too much memory through the "ksmbd_work_cache”. It will cause OOM issue. ksmbd has a credit mechanism but it can't handle this problem. This patch add the check if it exceeds max credits to prevent this problem by assuming that one smb request consumes at least one credit.
