CVE-2024-33600: nscd: Null pointer crashes after notfound response

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 23/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.2% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 68.4% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: azl3 glibc 2.38-11 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.38-11; cbl2 glibc 2.35-7 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.35-7; cbl2 glibc 2.35-7 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 2.35-7.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to azl3 glibc 2.38-11 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.38-11; cbl2 glibc 2.35-7 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.35-7; cbl2 glibc 2.35-7 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 2.35-7 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

nscd: Null pointer crashes after notfound response If the Name Service Cache Daemon's (nscd) cache fails to add a not-found netgroup response to the cache, the client request can result in a null pointer dereference. This flaw was introduced in glibc 2.15 when the cache was added to nscd. This vulnerability is only present in the nscd binary.

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
