CVE-2024-27013: tun: limit printing rate when illegal packet received by tun dev

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 22/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.27% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 14cdb43dbc827e18ac7d5b30c5b4c676219f1421, 40f4ced305c6c47487d3cd8da54676e2acc1a6ad, 4b0dcae5c4797bf31c63011ed62917210d3fdac3; azl3 kernel 6.6.22.1-2 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.35.1-5; azl3 kernel 6.6.35.1-5 on Azure Linux 3.0 -.
  • Mentioned 2 times in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 14cdb43dbc827e18ac7d5b30c5b4c676219f1421, 40f4ced305c6c47487d3cd8da54676e2acc1a6ad, 4b0dcae5c4797bf31c63011ed62917210d3fdac3; azl3 kernel 6.6.22.1-2 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.35.1-5; azl3 kernel 6.6.35.1-5 on Azure Linux 3.0 - or later.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: tun: limit printing rate when illegal packet received by tun dev vhost_worker will call tun call backs to receive packets. If too many illegal packets arrives, tun_do_read will keep dumping packet contents. When console is enabled, it will costs much more cpu time to dump packet and soft lockup will be detected. net_ratelimit mechanism can be used to limit the dumping rate.
