CVE-2023-6693: Qemu: virtio-net: stack buffer overflow in virtio_net_flush_tx()

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 21/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.33% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: qemu (Debian:11) 1:5.2+dfsg-11+deb11u4; qemu (Debian:12) 1:7.2+dfsg-7+deb12u4; qemu (Debian:13) 1:8.2.0+ds-3.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to qemu (Debian:11) 1:5.2+dfsg-11+deb11u4; qemu (Debian:12) 1:7.2+dfsg-7+deb12u4; qemu (Debian:13) 1:8.2.0+ds-3 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A stack based buffer overflow was found in the virtio-net device of QEMU. This issue occurs when flushing TX in the virtio_net_flush_tx function if guest features VIRTIO_NET_F_HASH_REPORT, VIRTIO_F_VERSION_1 and VIRTIO_NET_F_MRG_RXBUF are enabled. This could allow a malicious user to overwrite local variables allocated on the stack. Specifically, the `out_sg` variable could be used to read a part of process memory and send it to the wire, causing an information leak.
