Kernel: gsm multiplexing race condition leads to privilege escalation

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 28/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.73% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 53.5% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: bpftool (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9; kernel (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9; kernel-abi-stablelists (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to bpftool (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9; kernel (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9; kernel-abi-stablelists (AlmaLinux:8) 4.18.0-513.24.1.el8_9 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A race condition was found in the GSM 0710 tty multiplexor in the Linux kernel. This issue occurs when two threads execute the GSMIOC_SETCONF ioctl on the same tty file descriptor with the gsm line discipline enabled, and can lead to a use-after-free problem on a struct gsm_dlci while restarting the gsm mux. This could allow a local unprivileged user to escalate their privileges on the system.
