CVE-2023-5870: Postgresql: role pg_signal_backend can signal certain superuser processes.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 18/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 2.5% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 85% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. Administrator privileges are required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: CBL Mariner 2.0 ARM 14.14-1; CBL Mariner 2.0 x64 14.14-1.
  • Severity is disputed: the assigning authority (CNA) scores it 2.2, NVD 4.4.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to CBL Mariner 2.0 ARM 14.14-1; CBL Mariner 2.0 x64 14.14-1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A flaw was found in PostgreSQL involving the pg_cancel_backend role that signals background workers, including the logical replication launcher, autovacuum workers, and the autovacuum launcher. Successful exploitation requires a non-core extension with a less-resilient background worker and would affect that specific background worker only. This issue may allow a remote high privileged user to launch a denial of service (DoS) attack.

Root cause

Code that parses nested structures sets no depth or size limit. A small input can turn into a disproportionate processing load.

A representative example of this vulnerability class. Not the vendor's source code; it shows the faulty pattern and its fix.

Vulnerable

function expand(node) {  return node.children.map(expand);}

Fixed
