CVE-2023-53286: RDMA/mlx5: Return the firmware result upon destroying QP/RQ
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.15% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: Linux Linux 04704c201bb08efaf96d7b1396c6864f8984e244, 1a650d3ccd79cdd5796edd864683a6b8dd0bf576, 22664c06e997087fe37f9ba208008c948571214a.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: RDMA/mlx5: Return the firmware result upon destroying QP/RQ Previously when destroying a QP/RQ, the result of the firmware destruction function was ignored and upper layers weren't informed about the failure. Which in turn could lead to various problems since when upper layer isn't aware of the failure it continues its operation thinking that the related QP/RQ was successfully destroyed while it actually wasn't, which could lead to the below kernel WARN. Currently, we return the correct firmware destruction status to upper layers which in case of the RQ would be mlx5_ib_destroy_wq() which was already capable of handling RQ destruction failure or in case of a QP to destroy_qp_common(), which now would actually warn upon qp destruction failure. No dated events beyond publication.
No history yet (it accumulates with the daily EPSS job).
Patch and commit links

Variant candidates
Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.
No nightly-computed relations.
Chain candidates
An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
