ath11k: fix netdev open race
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 18/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.16% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
- Fixed version: Linux Linux 307ce58270b3b50ca21cfcc910568429b06803f7, a2c45f8c3d18269e641f0c7da2dde47ef8414034, abb7dc8fbb27c15dcc927df56190f3c5ede58bd5.

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ath11k: fix netdev open race Make sure to allocate resources needed before registering the device. This specifically avoids having a racing open() trigger a BUG_ON() in mod_timer() when ath11k_mac_op_start() is called before the mon_reap_timer as been set up. I did not see this issue with next-20220310, but I hit it on every probe with next-20220511. Perhaps some timing changed in between. Variant candidates
Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.
No nightly-computed relations.
Chain candidates
An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
