mxser: fix xmit_buf leak in activate when LSR == 0xff

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 22/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.27% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 125b7c929fc9b1e5eaa344bceb6367dfa6fd3f9d, 2cd05c38a27bee7fb42aa4d43174d68ac55dac0f, 376922045009f8ea2d20a8fa3475e95b47c41690.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 125b7c929fc9b1e5eaa344bceb6367dfa6fd3f9d, 2cd05c38a27bee7fb42aa4d43174d68ac55dac0f, 376922045009f8ea2d20a8fa3475e95b47c41690 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: mxser: fix xmit_buf leak in activate when LSR == 0xff When LSR is 0xff in ->activate() (rather unlike), we return an error. Provided ->shutdown() is not called when ->activate() fails, nothing actually frees the buffer in this case. Fix this by properly freeing the buffer in a designated label. We jump there also from the "!info->type" if now too.

Variant candidates

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
