CVE-2022-34918: An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 5.18.9.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Plan (action score 40/100)

  • A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Because a ready-made attack tool exists, priority is at least “Plan”.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 5.4% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 92.7% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: bpftool (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0; kernel (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0; kernel-abi-stablelists (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Add it to your regular patch cycle. Upgrade to bpftool (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0; kernel (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0; kernel-abi-stablelists (AlmaLinux:9) 5.14.0-70.26.1.el9_0 or later.

An issue was discovered in the Linux kernel through 5.18.9. A type confusion bug in nft_set_elem_init (leading to a buffer overflow) could be used by a local attacker to escalate privileges, a different vulnerability than CVE-2022-32250. (The attacker can obtain root access, but must start with an unprivileged user namespace to obtain CAP_NET_ADMIN access.) This can be fixed in nft_setelem_parse_data in net/netfilter/nf_tables_api.c.
