CVE-2020-11080: Denial of service in nghttp2
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 32/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 5.3% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 92.5% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: libnghttp2 (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1; libnghttp2-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1; nghttp2 (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1.
- Severity is disputed: the assigning authority (CNA) scores it 3.7, NVD 7.5.
- Mentioned 4 times in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).
Low priority for now. Upgrade to libnghttp2 (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1; libnghttp2-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1; nghttp2 (AlmaLinux:8) 1.33.0-3.el8_2.1 or later.
Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it
Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
In nghttp2 before version 1.41.0, the overly large HTTP/2 SETTINGS frame payload causes denial of service. The proof of concept attack involves a malicious client constructing a SETTINGS frame with a length of 14,400 bytes (2400 individual settings entries) over and over again. The attack causes the CPU to spike at 100%. nghttp2 v1.41.0 fixes this vulnerability. There is a workaround to this vulnerability. Implement nghttp2_on_frame_recv_callback callback, and if received frame is SETTINGS frame and the number of settings entries are large (e.g., > 32), then drop the connection.
