Noroxi assessment

Priority: This week (action score 77/100)

  • CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (Dec 10, 2021). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Jun 10, 2022.
  • A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 52.1% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 98.9% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: linux (Debian:10) 4.19.37-5+deb10u1; linux (Debian:12) 4.19.37-6; linux (Debian:8) 3.16.70-1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Don’t wait for the next maintenance window. Upgrade to linux (Debian:10) 4.19.37-5+deb10u1; linux (Debian:12) 4.19.37-6; linux (Debian:8) 3.16.70-1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · CISA KEV · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel before 5.1.17, ptrace_link in kernel/ptrace.c mishandles the recording of the credentials of a process that wants to create a ptrace relationship, which allows local users to obtain root access by leveraging certain scenarios with a parent-child process relationship, where a parent drops privileges and calls execve (potentially allowing control by an attacker). One contributing factor is an object lifetime issue (which can also cause a panic). Another contributing factor is incorrect marking of a ptrace relationship as privileged, which is exploitable through (for example) Polkit's pkexec helper with PTRACE_TRACEME. NOTE: SELinux deny_ptrace might be a usable workaround in some environments.

Actively exploited in the wild

CISA added this to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on Dec 10, 2021. That signals real attacks, not theory.

Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Jun 10, 2022.
