CVE-2026-39821: Invoking failure to reject ASCII-only Punycode-encoded labels in golang.org/x/net/idna
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 39/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.8% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 78.7% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: Go standard library net/http 1.25.13, 1.26.6, 1.27.0-rc.3; Go standard library net/http/internal/http2 1.25.13, 1.26.6, 1.27.0-rc.3; golang.org/x/net golang.org/x/net/idna 0.55.0.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to Go standard library net/http 1.25.13, 1.26.6, 1.27.0-rc.3; Go standard library net/http/internal/http2 1.25.13, 1.26.6, 1.27.0-rc.3; golang.org/x/net golang.org/x/net/idna 0.55.0 or later.
Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it
Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
The ToASCII and ToUnicode functions incorrectly accept Punycode-encoded labels that decode to an ASCII-only label. For example, ToUnicode("xn--example-.com") incorrectly returns the name "example.com" rather than an error. This behavior can lead to privilege escalation in programs using the idna package. For example, a program which performs privilege checks on the ASCII hostname may reject "example.com" but permit "xn--example-.com". If that program subsequently converts the ASCII hostname to Unicode, it will inadvertently permits access to the Unicode name "example.com".
