media: v4l2-ctrls: validate HEVC tile counts

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.16% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 400cd78a63cc647412cf069c9851bdea2818340c, 724915535558b14c111ad8a498b896026dfe8d20, 975e0180488966bb709092a52408604bd4f4edd9; azl3 kernel 6.6.157.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.158.1-1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 400cd78a63cc647412cf069c9851bdea2818340c, 724915535558b14c111ad8a498b896026dfe8d20, 975e0180488966bb709092a52408604bd4f4edd9; azl3 kernel 6.6.157.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.158.1-1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: media: v4l2-ctrls: validate HEVC tile counts The stateless HEVC decoders read num_tile_columns_minus1 + 1 entries from column_width_minus1[] and num_tile_rows_minus1 + 1 from row_height_minus1[] and use them as tile-loop bounds, but std_validate_compound() does not bound these u8 counts. Reject a V4L2_CTRL_TYPE_HEVC_PPS with tiling enabled whose tile counts exceed the uAPI array capacity, mirroring the existing compound-control range checks.

No credits in the CNA record.

Variant candidates

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
