ceph: reject export_targets ranks >= CEPH_MAX_MDS in mdsmap decode

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 39/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.50% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: Linux Linux 3740c88ca9cb2210a8dbdd55ea4cec119fbe86fe, 4d298880f82c42383b36946bafde7ccf4d804c9b, 736adee11af36e407ed902264f8b2fb5cf94b62f; azl3 kernel 6.6.152.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.157.1-1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Low priority for now. Upgrade to Linux Linux 3740c88ca9cb2210a8dbdd55ea4cec119fbe86fe, 4d298880f82c42383b36946bafde7ccf4d804c9b, 736adee11af36e407ed902264f8b2fb5cf94b62f; azl3 kernel 6.6.152.1-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 6.6.157.1-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved: ceph: reject export_targets ranks >= CEPH_MAX_MDS in mdsmap decode MDSMap export_targets entries are monitor controlled. check_new_map() uses each entry as a bit number in a fixed stack bitmap, so a rank outside the protocol namespace can make set_bit() write past the end of the array. Reject ranks outside CEPH_MAX_MDS while decoding the map. Do not validate against possible_max_rank here because maps may legitimately reference ranks beyond a temporarily reduced max_mds.
