CVE-2026-78475: Gimp: unbounded stack vla and 21-byte stack over-read in pix (esm) loader
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 24/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.26% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. No account or password is required. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: gimp (Debian:13) 3.0.4-3+deb13u11; gimp (Debian:14) 3.2.6-1; gimp (openSUSE:Leap 16.0) 3.0.8-bp160.9.1.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to gimp (Debian:13) 3.0.4-3+deb13u11; gimp (Debian:14) 3.2.6-1; gimp (openSUSE:Leap 16.0) 3.0.8-bp160.9.1 or later.
Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it
Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
A flaw was found in the file-pix (ESM) plugin in GIMP. When processing a specially crafted PIX image file, the plugin allocates a Variable-Length Array (VLA) on the stack without proper bounds checking, causing an unbounded stack allocation followed by a 21-byte stack over-read. This can result in a denial of service due to stack exhaustion and a limited information disclosure of stack memory contents into an intermediate file.
