Mongoose: Path traversal in SSI #include directives enables arbitrary file read
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 26/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.65% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 50.8% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: cesanta mongoose 7.22.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to cesanta mongoose 7.22 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
Mongoose is an embedded web server and network library. Prior to 7.22, an attacker who can control an SSI-enabled file can place directory traversal sequences in an #include file or #include virtual directive. The mg_ssi() function in src/ssi.c concatenates the directive argument into a filesystem path without calling mg_path_is_sane(), allowing an MG_ENABLE_SSI deployment with ssi_pattern configured to disclose files readable by the Mongoose process. This issue is fixed in version 7.22.
