CVE-2026-6846: Binutils: binutils: arbitrary code execution via malformed xcoff object file processing

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 31/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.17% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. No account or password is required. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: sourceware.org/git/binutils-gdb.git binutils 2.47; azl3 binutils 2.41-11 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.41-12; azl3 gdb 13.2-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 13.2-8.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to sourceware.org/git/binutils-gdb.git binutils 2.47; azl3 binutils 2.41-11 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.41-12; azl3 gdb 13.2-7 on Azure Linux 3.0 13.2-8 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A flaw was found in binutils. A heap-buffer-overflow vulnerability exists when processing a specially crafted XCOFF (Extended Common Object File Format) object file during linking. A local attacker could trick a user into processing this malicious file, which could lead to arbitrary code execution, allowing the attacker to run unauthorized commands, or cause a denial of service, making the system unavailable.
