MessagePack::Buffer#clear Use-After-Free that Enables Cross-Buffer Disclosure
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 8/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.22% (FIRST EPSS).
- Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: msgpack msgpack-ruby 1.8.2; azl3 rubygem-msgpack 1.7.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 1.8.4-1.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to msgpack msgpack-ruby 1.8.2; azl3 rubygem-msgpack 1.7.2-1 on Azure Linux 3.0 1.8.4-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
MessagePack for Ruby is an implementation of the MessagePack binary serialization format. Prior to 1.8.2, MessagePack::Buffer#clear in ext/msgpack/buffer.c leaves rmem_last, rmem_end, and rmem_owner stale after _msgpack_buffer_shift_chunk returns an rmem page to the shared pool, allowing a subsequent Buffer#write and a second MessagePack::Buffer to alias the page and disclose or corrupt cross-buffer data. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.2.
