YAML::Syck versions before 1.38 for Perl has an out-of-bounds read

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 29/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.42% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:12) 1.34-2+deb12u3; libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:13) 1.34-2+deb13u3; libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:14) 1.36-3.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:12) 1.34-2+deb12u3; libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:13) 1.34-2+deb13u3; libyaml-syck-perl (Debian:14) 1.36-3 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

YAML::Syck versions before 1.38 for Perl has an out-of-bounds read. The base60 (sexagesimal) parsing code in perl_syck.h has a buffer underflow bug in both int#base60 and float#base60 handlers. When processing the leftmost segment of a colon-separated value (e.g., the 1 in 1:30:45), the inner while loop can decrement a pointer past the start of the string buffer: while ( colon >= ptr && *colon != ':' ) { colon--; } if ( *colon == ':' ) *colon = '\0'; // colon may be ptr-1 here When no colon is found (final/leftmost segment), colon becomes ptr-1, and the subsequent *colon dereference reads one byte before the allocated buffer.

Variant candidates

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
