CVE-2026-48710: Starlette has missing Host header validation that poisons request.url.path, bypassing path-based security checks

Noroxi assessment

Priority: This week (action score 77/100)

  • CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (Sep 2, 2026). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Sep 16, 2026.
  • A ready-made attack module is public (Nuclei); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 70.2% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.3% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: starlette (Debian:12) 0.26.1-1+deb12u1; starlette (Debian:13) 0.46.1-3+deb13u2; starlette (Debian:14) 1.1.0-1.

Don’t wait for the next maintenance window. Upgrade to starlette (Debian:12) 0.26.1-1+deb12u1; starlette (Debian:13) 0.46.1-3+deb13u2; starlette (Debian:14) 1.1.0-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · CISA KEV · FIRST EPSS

Starlette is a lightweight ASGI framework/toolkit. Prior to version 1.0.1, the HTTP `Host` request header was not validated before being used to reconstruct `request.url`. Because the routing algorithm relies on the raw HTTP path while `request.url` is rebuilt from the `Host` header, a malformed header could make `request.url.path` differ from the path that was actually requested. Middleware and endpoints that apply security restrictions based on `request.url` (rather than the raw `scope` path) could therefore be bypassed. Users should upgrade to a version greater than or equal to version 1.0.1, which validates the `Host` header against the grammar of RFC 9112 §3.2 / RFC 3986 §3.2.2 when constructing `request.url` and falls back to `scope["server"]` for malformed values.

Actively exploited in the wild

CISA added this to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on Sep 2, 2026. That signals real attacks, not theory.

Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Sep 16, 2026.
