CVE-2026-33216: NATS has MQTT plaintext password disclosure
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 30/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.37% (FIRST EPSS).
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
- Fixed version: azl3 telegraf 1.31.0-17 on Azure Linux 3.0 1.31.0-18; cbl2 telegraf 1.29.4-22 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 Release Notes.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to azl3 telegraf 1.31.0-17 on Azure Linux 3.0 1.31.0-18; cbl2 telegraf 1.29.4-22 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 Release Notes or later.

NATS-Server is a High-Performance server for NATS.io, a cloud and edge native messaging system. Prior to versions 2.11.15 and 2.12.6, for MQTT deployments using usercodes/passwords: MQTT passwords are incorrectly classified as a non-authenticating identity statement (JWT) and exposed via monitoring endpoints. Versions 2.11.14 and 2.12.6 contain a fix. As a workaround, ensure monitoring end-points are adequately secured. Best practice remains to not expose the monitoring endpoint to the Internet or other untrusted network users.
