CVE-2026-29013: libcoap Out-of-Bounds Read in OSCORE CBOR Unwrap Handling
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 35/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.29% (FIRST EPSS).
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
- Fixed version: libcoap3 (Debian:13) 4.3.4-1.1+deb13u3; libcoap3 (Debian:14) 4.3.5-3; libcoap (openSUSE:Tumbleweed) 4.3.5b-1.1.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to libcoap3 (Debian:13) 4.3.4-1.1+deb13u3; libcoap3 (Debian:14) 4.3.5-3; libcoap (openSUSE:Tumbleweed) 4.3.5b-1.1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
libcoap contains out-of-bounds read vulnerabilities in OSCORE Appendix B.2 CBOR unwrap handling where get_byte_inc() in src/oscore/oscore_cbor.c relies solely on assert() for bounds checking, which is removed in release builds compiled with NDEBUG. Attackers can send crafted CoAP requests with malformed OSCORE options or responses during OSCORE negotiation to trigger out-of-bounds reads during CBOR parsing and potentially cause out-of-bounds reads through integer wraparound in allocation size computation.
