CVE-2025-48384: Git allows arbitrary code execution through broken config quoting
Noroxi assessment
Priority: This week (action score 63/100)
- CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (Aug 25, 2025). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Sep 15, 2025.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 4.3% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 91.2% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. A user must open a link or visit a page. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
- Fixed version: Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 version 15.9 (includes 15.0 - 15.8) 15.9.75; Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 version 16.11 (includes 16.0 - 16.10) 16.11.49; Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 version 17.10 17.10.17.
Don’t wait for the next maintenance window. Upgrade to Microsoft Visual Studio 2017 version 15.9 (includes 15.0 - 15.8) 15.9.75; Microsoft Visual Studio 2019 version 16.11 (includes 16.0 - 16.10) 16.11.49; Microsoft Visual Studio 2022 version 17.10 17.10.17 or later.

Git is a fast, scalable, distributed revision control system with an unusually rich command set that provides both high-level operations and full access to internals. When reading a config value, Git strips any trailing carriage return and line feed (CRLF). When writing a config entry, values with a trailing CR are not quoted, causing the CR to be lost when the config is later read. When initializing a submodule, if the submodule path contains a trailing CR, the altered path is read resulting in the submodule being checked out to an incorrect location. If a symlink exists that points the altered path to the submodule hooks directory, and the submodule contains an executable post-checkout hook, the script may be unintentionally executed after checkout. This vulnerability is fixed in v2.43.7, v2.44.4, v2.45.4, v2.46.4, v2.47.3, v2.48.2, v2.49.1, and v2.50.1.
