CVE-2025-26466: Openssh: denial-of-service in openssh

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 35/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 38.6% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 98.5% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: azl3 openssh 9.8p1-3 on Azure Linux 3.0 9.8p1-3; azl3 openssh 9.8p1-4 on Azure Linux 3.0 9.8p1-3.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to azl3 openssh 9.8p1-3 on Azure Linux 3.0 9.8p1-3; azl3 openssh 9.8p1-4 on Azure Linux 3.0 9.8p1-3 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A flaw was found in the OpenSSH package. For each ping packet the SSH server receives, a pong packet is allocated in a memory buffer and stored in a queue of packages. It is only freed when the server/client key exchange has finished. A malicious client may keep sending such packages, leading to an uncontrolled increase in memory consumption on the server side. Consequently, the server may become unavailable, resulting in a denial of service attack.
