CVE-2025-0624: Grub2: net: out-of-bounds write in grub_net_search_config_file()

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 30/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.4% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 72.4% of all records.
  • Someone on the same network segment can trigger it. Administrator privileges are required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: azl3 grub2 2.06-24 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.06-24; cbl2 grub2 2.06-14 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.06-14; cbl2 grub2 2.06-14 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 2.06-14.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to azl3 grub2 2.06-24 on Azure Linux 3.0 2.06-24; cbl2 grub2 2.06-14 on CBL Mariner 2.0 2.06-14; cbl2 grub2 2.06-14 on CBL-Mariner 2.0 2.06-14 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A flaw was found in grub2. During the network boot process, when trying to search for the configuration file, grub copies data from a user controlled environment variable into an internal buffer using the grub_strcpy() function. During this step, it fails to consider the environment variable length when allocating the internal buffer, resulting in an out-of-bounds write. If correctly exploited, this issue may result in remote code execution through the same network segment grub is searching for the boot information, which can be used to by-pass secure boot protections.
