CVE-2024-38475: Apache HTTP Server weakness in mod_rewrite when first segment of substitution matches filesystem path.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Now (action score 96/100)

  • CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (May 1, 2025). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: May 22, 2025.
  • A ready-made attack module is public (Nuclei); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 99.9% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.9% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: httpd (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1; httpd-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1; httpd-filesystem (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Patch today or shut off access. Upgrade to httpd (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1; httpd-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1; httpd-filesystem (AlmaLinux:8) 2.4.37-65.module_el8.10.0+3872+9b8ab21e.1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · CISA KEV · FIRST EPSS

Improper escaping of output in mod_rewrite in Apache HTTP Server 2.4.59 and earlier allows an attacker to map URLs to filesystem locations that are permitted to be served by the server but are not intentionally/directly reachable by any URL, resulting in code execution or source code disclosure. Substitutions in server context that use a backreferences or variables as the first segment of the substitution are affected.  Some unsafe RewiteRules will be broken by this change and the rewrite flag "UnsafePrefixStat" can be used to opt back in once ensuring the substitution is appropriately constrained.
