Denial-of-service due to unbounded pattern matching in Redis
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 26/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 62.5% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: redis (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5; redis-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5; redis-doc (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to redis (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5; redis-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5; redis-doc (AlmaLinux:8) 6.2.17-1.module_el8.10.0+3946+3de613d5 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
Redis is an open source, in-memory database that persists on disk. Authenticated users can trigger a denial-of-service by using specially crafted, long string match patterns on supported commands such as `KEYS`, `SCAN`, `PSUBSCRIBE`, `FUNCTION LIST`, `COMMAND LIST` and ACL definitions. Matching of extremely long patterns may result in unbounded recursion, leading to stack overflow and process crash. This problem has been fixed in Redis versions 6.2.16, 7.2.6, and 7.4.1. Users are advised to upgrade. There are no known workarounds for this vulnerability.

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.
No nightly-computed relations.
Chain candidates
An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
