CVE-2024-1441: Libvirt: off-by-one error in udevlistinterfacesbystatus()

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 22/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.40% (FIRST EPSS).
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: libvirt (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1; libvirt-client (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1; libvirt-client-qemu (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to libvirt (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1; libvirt-client (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1; libvirt-client-qemu (AlmaLinux:9) 10.0.0-6.2.el9_4.alma.1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

An off-by-one error flaw was found in the udevListInterfacesByStatus() function in libvirt when the number of interfaces exceeds the size of the `names` array. This issue can be reproduced by sending specially crafted data to the libvirt daemon, allowing an unprivileged client to perform a denial of service attack by causing the libvirt daemon to crash.
