CVE-2024-12243: Gnutls: gnutls impacted by inefficient der decoding in libtasn1 leading to remote dos

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 21/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.2% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 70.2% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/ gnutls 3.8.8; azl3 gnutls 3.8.3-4 on Azure Linux 3.0 3.8.3-4; cbl2 gnutls 3.7.11-3 on CBL Mariner 2.0 3.7.11-3.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to gitlab.com/gnutls/gnutls/ gnutls 3.8.8; azl3 gnutls 3.8.3-4 on Azure Linux 3.0 3.8.3-4; cbl2 gnutls 3.7.11-3 on CBL Mariner 2.0 3.7.11-3 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

A flaw was found in GnuTLS, which relies on libtasn1 for ASN.1 data processing. Due to an inefficient algorithm in libtasn1, decoding certain DER-encoded certificate data can take excessive time, leading to increased resource consumption. This flaw allows a remote attacker to send a specially crafted certificate, causing GnuTLS to become unresponsive or slow, resulting in a denial-of-service condition.
