CVE-2023-31124: AutoTools does not set CARES_RANDOM_FILE during cross compilation
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Monitor (action score 14/100)
- The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.92% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 60.5% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
- Fixed version: c-ares c-ares 1.19.1; cm1 c-ares 1.19.1-1 on CBL Mariner 1.0 1.19.1-1.
Low priority for now. Upgrade to c-ares c-ares 1.19.1; cm1 c-ares 1.19.1-1 on CBL Mariner 1.0 1.19.1-1 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS
c-ares is an asynchronous resolver library. When cross-compiling c-ares and using the autotools build system, CARES_RANDOM_FILE will not be set, as seen when cross compiling aarch64 android. This will downgrade to using rand() as a fallback which could allow an attacker to take advantage of the lack of entropy by not using a CSPRNG. This issue was patched in version 1.19.1.
