CVE-2022-48338: An issue was discovered in GNU Emacs through 28.2.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 29/100)

  • The sources we track (CISA KEV, Exploit-DB, Metasploit, Nuclei, GitHub) show no public exploit code or exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 1.6% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 76.1% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: emacs (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1; emacs-common (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1; emacs-filesystem (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1.

Low priority for now. Upgrade to emacs (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1; emacs-common (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1; emacs-filesystem (AlmaLinux:9) 1:27.2-8.el9_2.1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

An issue was discovered in GNU Emacs through 28.2. In ruby-mode.el, the ruby-find-library-file function has a local command injection vulnerability. The ruby-find-library-file function is an interactive function, and bound to C-c C-f. Inside the function, the external command gem is called through shell-command-to-string, but the feature-name parameters are not escaped. Thus, malicious Ruby source files may cause commands to be executed.

No credits in the CNA record.

Variant candidates

Same product, same weakness class, within 18 months. If the patch missed the root cause, the sibling bug is here.

No nightly-computed relations.

Chain candidates

An authentication bypass and a privilege-requiring bug in the same product, published close together: combined they may become an unauthenticated path.
