CVE-2022-33891: Apache Spark shell command injection vulnerability via Spark UI
Noroxi assessment
Priority: Now (action score 93/100)
- CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (Mar 7, 2023). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Mar 28, 2023.
- A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit, Nuclei); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 93.2% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.8% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
- Fixed version: org.apache.spark:spark-parent_2.12 (Maven) 3.2.2; pyspark (PyPI) 3.2.2, 3.1.3; openstack-barbican (SUSE:OpenStack Cloud 9) 7.0.1~dev24-3.17.1.
Patch today or shut off access. Upgrade to org.apache.spark:spark-parent_2.12 (Maven) 3.2.2; pyspark (PyPI) 3.2.2, 3.1.3; openstack-barbican (SUSE:OpenStack Cloud 9) 7.0.1~dev24-3.17.1 or later.

The Apache Spark UI offers the possibility to enable ACLs via the configuration option spark.acls.enable. With an authentication filter, this checks whether a user has access permissions to view or modify the application. If ACLs are enabled, a code path in HttpSecurityFilter can allow someone to perform impersonation by providing an arbitrary user name. A malicious user might then be able to reach a permission check function that will ultimately build a Unix shell command based on their input, and execute it. This will result in arbitrary shell command execution as the user Spark is currently running as. This affects Apache Spark versions 3.0.3 and earlier, versions 3.1.1 to 3.1.2, and versions 3.2.0 to 3.2.1.
