CVE-2022-1292: The c_rehash script allows command injection

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Plan (action score 54/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 82.6% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.6% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. A user must open a link or visit a page. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: openssl (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6; openssl-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6; openssl-libs (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6.
  • Severity is disputed: the assigning authority (CNA) scores it 9.8, NVD 7.3.
  • Mentioned 6 times in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Add it to your regular patch cycle. Upgrade to openssl (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6; openssl-devel (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6; openssl-libs (AlmaLinux:8) 1:1.1.1k-7.el8_6 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

The c_rehash script does not properly sanitise shell metacharacters to prevent command injection. This script is distributed by some operating systems in a manner where it is automatically executed. On such operating systems, an attacker could execute arbitrary commands with the privileges of the script. Use of the c_rehash script is considered obsolete and should be replaced by the OpenSSL rehash command line tool. Fixed in OpenSSL 3.0.3 (Affected 3.0.0,3.0.1,3.0.2). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1o (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1n). Fixed in OpenSSL 1.0.2ze (Affected 1.0.2-1.0.2zd).

Root cause

User input is inserted as text into a shell command. The shell may interpret special characters in the input as part of the command.

A representative example of this vulnerability class. Not the vendor's source code; it shows the faulty pattern and its fix.

Vulnerable

const host = req.body.host;exec("ping -c 1 " + host, onResult);

Fixed

ts
const host = req.body.host;if (!/^[a-z0-9.-]{1,253}$/i.test(host)) return res.sendStatus(400);execFile("ping", ["-c", "1", host], onResult);
