CVE-2021-3449: NULL pointer deref in signature_algorithms processing

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Plan (action score 42/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 63.5% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.2% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: openssl (Alpine:v3.10) 1.1.1k-r0; openssl3 (Alpine:v3.15) 1.1.1k-r0; openssl-src (crates.io) 111.15.0.
  • Mentioned 6 times in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Add it to your regular patch cycle. Upgrade to openssl (Alpine:v3.10) 1.1.1k-r0; openssl3 (Alpine:v3.15) 1.1.1k-r0; openssl-src (crates.io) 111.15.0 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

An OpenSSL TLS server may crash if sent a maliciously crafted renegotiation ClientHello message from a client. If a TLSv1.2 renegotiation ClientHello omits the signature_algorithms extension (where it was present in the initial ClientHello), but includes a signature_algorithms_cert extension then a NULL pointer dereference will result, leading to a crash and a denial of service attack. A server is only vulnerable if it has TLSv1.2 and renegotiation enabled (which is the default configuration). OpenSSL TLS clients are not impacted by this issue. All OpenSSL 1.1.1 versions are affected by this issue. Users of these versions should upgrade to OpenSSL 1.1.1k. OpenSSL 1.0.2 is not impacted by this issue. Fixed in OpenSSL 1.1.1k (Affected 1.1.1-1.1.1j).
