CVE-2020-8617: A logic error in code which checks TSIG validity can be used to trigger an assertion failure in tsig.c
Noroxi assessment
Priority: This week (action score 60/100)
- A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
- A ready-made attack tool exists and the flaw can be exploited over the network without an account, so priority is at least “This week”.
- Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 93.3% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.8% of all records.
- Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
- Fixed version: bind (Alpine:v3.10) 9.14.12-r0; bind9 (Debian:10) 1:9.11.5.P4+dfsg-5.1+deb10u1; bind9 (Debian:12) 1:9.16.3-1.
- Mentioned 5 times in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).
Don’t wait for the next maintenance window. Upgrade to bind (Alpine:v3.10) 9.14.12-r0; bind9 (Debian:10) 1:9.11.5.P4+dfsg-5.1+deb10u1; bind9 (Debian:12) 1:9.16.3-1 or later.

Using a specially-crafted message, an attacker may potentially cause a BIND server to reach an inconsistent state if the attacker knows (or successfully guesses) the name of a TSIG key used by the server. Since BIND, by default, configures a local session key even on servers whose configuration does not otherwise make use of it, almost all current BIND servers are vulnerable. In releases of BIND dating from March 2018 and after, an assertion check in tsig.c detects this inconsistent state and deliberately exits. Prior to the introduction of the check the server would continue operating in an inconsistent state, with potentially harmful results.
