CVE-2020-17519: Apache Flink directory traversal attack: reading remote files through the REST API

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Now (action score 89/100)

  • CISA has confirmed exploitation in the wild (May 23, 2024). Remediation deadline for US federal agencies: Jun 13, 2024.
  • A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit, Nuclei); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 98% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.9% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • According to CISA the attack is automatable: targets can be found by mass scanning.
  • Fixed version: org.apache.flink:flink-runtime_2.11 (Maven) 1.11.3; org.apache.flink:flink-runtime_2.12 (Maven) 1.11.3.

Patch today or shut off access. Upgrade to org.apache.flink:flink-runtime_2.11 (Maven) 1.11.3; org.apache.flink:flink-runtime_2.12 (Maven) 1.11.3 or later.

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · CISA KEV · FIRST EPSS

A change introduced in Apache Flink 1.11.0 (and released in 1.11.1 and 1.11.2 as well) allows attackers to read any file on the local filesystem of the JobManager through the REST interface of the JobManager process. Access is restricted to files accessible by the JobManager process. All users should upgrade to Flink 1.11.3 or 1.12.0 if their Flink instance(s) are exposed. The issue was fixed in commit b561010b0ee741543c3953306037f00d7a9f0801 from apache/flink:master.
