LibreLogo global-event script execution

Noroxi assessment

Priority: This week (action score 62/100)

  • A ready-made attack module is public (Metasploit); exploiting it takes no special expertise.
  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (Exploit-DB); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 77.8% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99.5% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. No special conditions are required; it is repeatable.
  • Fixed version: libreoffice (Debian:10) 1:6.1.5-3+deb10u3; libreoffice (Debian:12) 1:6.3.0-1; libreoffice (Debian:8) 1:4.3.3-2+deb8u13.

Don’t wait for the next maintenance window. Upgrade to libreoffice (Debian:10) 1:6.1.5-3+deb10u3; libreoffice (Debian:12) 1:6.3.0-1; libreoffice (Debian:8) 1:4.3.3-2+deb8u13 or later.

LibreOffice is typically bundled with LibreLogo, a programmable turtle vector graphics script, which can execute arbitrary python commands contained with the document it is launched from. Protection was added, to address CVE-2019-9848, to block calling LibreLogo from document event script handers, e.g. mouse over. However LibreOffice also has a separate feature where documents can specify that pre-installed scripts can be executed on various global script events such as document-open, etc. In the fixed versions, global script event handlers are validated equivalently to document script event handlers. This issue affects: Document Foundation LibreOffice versions prior to 6.2.6.
