CVE-2019-6111: An issue was discovered in OpenSSH 7.9.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Plan (action score 40/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (Exploit-DB, GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 58.2% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 99% of all records.
  • Anyone who can reach it over the internet can trigger it. No account or password is required. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: openssh (Alpine:v3.10) 7.9_p1-r3; dropbear (Alpine:v3.24) 2026.91-r0, 2025.89-r0; openssh (Alpine:v3.6) 7.5_p1-r4.

Add it to your regular patch cycle. Upgrade to openssh (Alpine:v3.10) 7.9_p1-r3; dropbear (Alpine:v3.24) 2026.91-r0, 2025.89-r0; openssh (Alpine:v3.6) 7.5_p1-r4 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

An issue was discovered in OpenSSH 7.9. Due to the scp implementation being derived from 1983 rcp, the server chooses which files/directories are sent to the client. However, the scp client only performs cursory validation of the object name returned (only directory traversal attacks are prevented). A malicious scp server (or Man-in-The-Middle attacker) can overwrite arbitrary files in the scp client target directory. If recursive operation (-r) is performed, the server can manipulate subdirectories as well (for example, to overwrite the .ssh/authorized_keys file).

Root cause

A user-supplied file name is joined with the allowed directory, but the result is never checked to confirm it is still inside that directory.

A representative example of this vulnerability class. Not the vendor's source code; it shows the faulty pattern and its fix.

Vulnerable

ts
const file = path.join(ROOT, req.query.name);res.sendFile(file);

Fixed

ts
const file = path.resolve(ROOT, req.query.name);if (!file.startsWith(ROOT + path.sep)) {  return res.sendStatus(400);}res.sendFile(file);
