CVE-2019-18683· NVD / CVE Program· CNA mitre

An issue was discovered in drivers/media/platform/vivid in the Linux kernel through 5.3.8.

Noroxi assessment

Priority: Monitor (action score 28/100)

  • Public proof-of-concept code exists (GitHub); there is no record of exploitation in the wild.
  • Probability of exploitation in the next 30 days: 0.99% (FIRST EPSS); higher than 62% of all records.
  • Someone with local access to the system can trigger it. A low-privileged account is enough. No user action is required. Special conditions such as timing or configuration are required.
  • Fixed version: linux (Debian:12) 5.3.15-1; kernel-debug (openSUSE:Leap 15.1) 4.12.14-lp151.28.36.1; kernel-default (openSUSE:Leap 15.1) 4.12.14-lp151.28.36.1.
  • Mentioned 1 time in Turkish national cyber security advisories (siberguvenlik.gov.tr).

Low priority for now. Upgrade to linux (Debian:12) 5.3.15-1; kernel-debug (openSUSE:Leap 15.1) 4.12.14-lp151.28.36.1; kernel-default (openSUSE:Leap 15.1) 4.12.14-lp151.28.36.1 or later.

Generated automatically from the record's data: CVSS (NVD and CNA), CISA KEV and SSVC, FIRST EPSS, exploit sources, fixed versions. How we calculate it

Primary sources: NVD · CVE.org · FIRST EPSS

An issue was discovered in drivers/media/platform/vivid in the Linux kernel through 5.3.8. It is exploitable for privilege escalation on some Linux distributions where local users have /dev/video0 access, but only if the driver happens to be loaded. There are multiple race conditions during streaming stopping in this driver (part of the V4L2 subsystem). These issues are caused by wrong mutex locking in vivid_stop_generating_vid_cap(), vivid_stop_generating_vid_out(), sdr_cap_stop_streaming(), and the corresponding kthreads. At least one of these race conditions leads to a use-after-free.
